I dropped my daughter off at day-care this morning. Just after I turned off the engine, I heard her small voice pipe up from the back seat, saying two words - "crack cocaine". How do I explain this? Why do I have to explain this? Should I stop listening to the news? Rob Ford - this is not acceptable. In fact it is beyond ridiculous.
Who in their right mind STILL THINKS THIS GUY SHOULD BE MAYOR?
I agree with some of the more insightful commentary - such as the fact that he is a spoiled rich kid, not-so-bright bully type, who is in way over his head. He is being enabled by his family, who have pretensions of glory in the conservative caucus. Like him or not, he is not a quitter. In fact he is stubborn and single minded to a fault.
The only reason he is anything more than a perennial council back-bench filler and springer of occasional "tax payer tirades" is owing almost entirely to the nature of urban sprawl in the 50s and 60s, and the Geryymandering actions of Mike Harris with his city amalgamation.
Vast tracts of the surrounding GTA are full of middle aged, mostly white, deeply conservative upper working class and lower middle class people. Before amalgamation, they had their own cities, with councils etc that could be responsive to their agendas. North York, for example, had free sidewalk plowing throughout.
Post amalgamation - a different story. Transit is seen by the GTA belt as a necessary evil - better heard and not seen. Paid for by them, used by others. They are not to blame for buying the American dream of a house in the suburbs and two cars in the garage. Same thing for homeless, libraries, the arts, even schools. Now that they have had theirs, no need to go on paying for them is there?
I actually don't really have a problem with people voting after their own short term interests. That said, I think we had a perfect storm. The left was spread between a few not so attractive candidates, and apathy was rife. Rob Ford ignited the imagination of those with little imagination. Many of the brighter folks who elected him are starting to regret it now. That leaves me with the others. Is there no limit to what you are prepared to do, say or support to save a few dollars?
To Ford Nation -
Get a conscience, or failing that, some shame. You have lost any semblance of reason. Shut up already.
To Rob Ford -
Leave already, get treatment. Or not. Before you are dragged off in handcuffs.
